Surf forecast height is significant wave height (Hs) — the average of the tallest third of waves measured by NDBC buoys. Face height (what you see) runs 1.5-2x the forecast number. So a '3-5 ft' forecast means 4.5-10 ft wave faces. Hawaiian scale uses roughly half of face height, adding further confusion.

What Is a Rip Current and How Do I Escape One?

A rip current is a narrow channel of water flowing from shore back out to sea at 1-8 feet per second. It pulls you OUT, not under. Wind transfers energy to the ocean surface through friction. Three factors determine wave size: wind speed, wind duration, and fetch (the uninterrupted distance wind blows over open water). Stronger wind over a larger fetch for a longer duration creates bigger waves. Waves then organize into swells that travel thousands of miles, arriving at coastlines days later.
