Kahaluʻu Beach Park south of Kailua-Kona is a small bay protected by a man-made breakwater that creates calm water for snorkeling and swimming. The northern corner of the bay features a gentle reef break that produces soft rollers perfect for beginners learning to surf or SUP. Watch for slippery lava rocks and keep an eye on turtles and other marine life that frequent the bay.
Stay on the inside peak if you're a beginner and let the larger sets roll through; keep your knees bent and watch for other learners.
Low to mid tide, light east winds, 1–3 ft southwest swell
