The Virginia end of Assateague is an exposed Atlantic beach break with shifting sandbars and left and right peaks. Tropical swell and nor'easters produce the most useful surf, while ordinary summer days are often small and soft.
Early access
Reach the ocean only by the signed public refuge route. The map pin marks the surf zone, not a vehicle route or launch point; do not enter closed wildlife areas.
Parking
Use the public Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge beach parking and obey refuge closures, hours, and posted fees. Parking can fill during peak summer and pony-event periods.
