Big Rock is a reef break in La Jolla, CA suited for advanced surfers. It picks up swells from SSW to NW (200°-310°). Best surfed at 1-4ft on a rising tide. Hazards include rip currents, rocks, shallow reef, localism, strong currents. Prime season runs January, February, March, October, November, and December. Expect crowded crowds. Offshore winds come from E (90°). Big Rock is a heavy, hollow left-hand reef break at the foot of Palomar Avenue. It produces fast stand-up barrels on west swells and is best suited to advanced surfers due to the very shallow reef and powerful waves. Mid tide with an east wind and 4–8 ft W–WNW swell. Sit deep near the reef and look for the west sets that throw hollow lefts. Watch for boils indicating shallow spots.
