Updated December 27, 2025 at 6:01 AM PT · Orange County · San Clemente, Orange County

Track live swell, tide, and weather for Orange County surf spots and log your sessions in Quiver to see year-over-year progression.

Upper Trestles sits just north of Lowers and offers a punchier, more sectiony wave with fewer surfers. It’s a great alternative when Lowers is maxed or overcrowded.

While Lowers grabbed the spotlight, local crews have cherished Uppers for decades thanks to its third reef takeoff and rippable inside bowl.

Expect a defined peak that breaks both left and right. The right offers a quick wall with lip sections, while the left runs into the beach with room for multiple carves.

Tide insight: Mid tide keeps the face open. Low tide runs fast but offers tubes; high tide fattens the wave significantly.

Swell outlook: South swells are primary, with combo west energy helping maintain shape. Windswell can create fun skatepark ramps when bigger swells fade.

Wind game plan: Morning glass or a light northeast breeze keeps it clean. Afternoon winds quickly add chop across the exposed face.

Water temperature watch: Similar to Lowers, with winter temps around 58°F and summer highs in the low 70s.

Crowd and safety notes: Expect a moderate pack and keep an eye on Shallow cobblestone reef, Strong current sweeping toward Lowers, Occasional military or ranger patrols enforcing access rules. Rotate respectfully, call your waves, and plan an exit route before paddling out.

Parking and amenities: Same as Lowers: Cristianitos parking lot and trail. Walk a bit farther north once you reach the beach.. Nearby support includes No beach facilities—pack what you need, Bike racks near the trailhead. Lock in a backup parking option so you can pivot fast when the lot reaches capacity.

Upper Trestles FAQs

Is Uppers less crowded than Lowers?

Yes. It still draws talent, but the pack is thinner and more laid-back than the main arena at Lowers.

Can I surf Uppers on a shortboard?

Absolutely. The wave is shorter but punchier—perfect for snappy turns and airs.

Does Uppers work on small swells?

It needs at least a chest-high south swell to light up. For tiny days, check Doheny or Old Man’s.
