San Onofre is a sprawling surf zone with cobblestone reefs, mellow points, and beachbreak peaks stretching from the power plant to Trail 6. Long rides and retro equipment define the vibe.

San Onofre has been a surfing landmark since the 1930s, with the iconic Old Man’s crew keeping the tradition alive. The base access road once limited crowds, but today it draws surfers from across SoCal.

The points deliver soft, rolling walls. Trails picks up extra energy and offers wedgier peaks. Expect long paddles and even longer rides on bigger south swells.

Tide insight: Mid to high tide keeps waves connected across the cobblestones. Low tide can be tricky with exposed rocks at takeoff.

Swell outlook: South swells drive the best days, while combo swells keep it fun year-round. NW swells back off due to shelter from Point La Jolla.

Wind game plan: Morning glass stretches late thanks to Camp Pendleton winds blocking the sea breeze. Afternoon onshores eventually add texture.

Water temperature watch: Winter lows around 57°F, summer highs near 71°F. The shallow cobblestone shelf retains warmth in late summer.

Crowd and safety notes: Expect a heavy pack and keep an eye on Crowded lineups with longboards and SUPs, Rocks just below the surface at low tide, Long walks from the parking lot to the preferred peak. Rotate respectfully, call your waves, and plan an exit route before paddling out.

Parking and amenities: State park entrance with limited spots; arrive before sunrise on weekends. Additional parking along the Trail access points.. Nearby support includes Portable restrooms and showers near the parking lot, Food trucks and coffee carts on summer weekends. Lock in a backup parking option so you can pivot fast when the lot reaches capacity.
